In 2016 I stayed at the Quinta in Portugal as part of a batik art workshop holiday hosted at the home of Frank and Daniela McClintock who moved to this beautiful area in the mountains above Faro from the UK in the 1980's. The accommodation has been developed to provide a holiday retreat particularly specialising in birdwatching holidays. It truly is Paradise in Portugal. Please take a look at this recent review of the Quinta by Alistair Sawdaw
"If I had expectations of what my forthcoming printing holiday in Portugal would provide me with, the reality when I arrived was surpassed over and over again. I had already met, albeit briefly, our delightful tutor for the week, Lucy Gell (pronounced Jell!) at a craft fair; liked her work and really liked her. I wasn't to be disappointed Lucy is professional, cheerful and a joy to be around. Her choice of venue - well what can one say, except that it was easy to see why Lucy fell in love with Paradise in Portugal, it is truly captivating. A beautiful setting, no traffic or aircraft noise, no light pollution, just lovely gardens, flowers, bird song and a beautiful spot for a daily swim, and the most hospitable hosts I have encountered at any 'hotel' I have stayed at thus far. The printing course was well planned and resourced, and Lucy was patient and dedicated to the 'enth' degree. I was a complete novice, but I came away with some printing I was happy with (with a little extra help and encouragement from Lucy) and a very good feeling about the whole experience. Thank you Lucy"

When I stayed there I too fell in love with the place and decided to host my first printmaking holiday there in June 2018 offering a week of printmaking, birdwatching and relaxation for up to 8 people in this wonderful home of Frank and Daniela. This has been a great success and I am now taking bookings for next year July 2020.
"I had a lovely time on the printmaking holiday and am proud if what I managed to achieve there thanks to your patience ! I think I am hooked on lino cuts now and have already sent off one of the cards I made for a friends birthday.
The atmosphere at the Quinta is just right for relaxing and getting inspired and of course the gorgeous weather helps.I really enjoyed the birdwatching with Frank and feel very lucky that you have found such a great place to host your holidays; the whole team there from Frank
and Daniela to the pets are second to none!"

"The week at the Quinta went so fast!
The location is fabulous...the 12 acre estate is the result of decades of careful care and planting. No passing cars, so tranquil. Great hosts and staff. Solar energy and sustainable water supply. Birds, frogs, lizards, and dogs to hang out with. We loved the little seated balcony area of our room.
The bird trips with Frank were excellent. Due to his keen expertise we saw a huge range of birds in short space of time. Bee-eater, kingfishers, flamingos, spoonbills and of course the famous Golden Orioles. The art sessions were great, with the patient help of Lucy I produced some beautiful prints and cards using techniques that i can build on at home. The home cooked food was excellent. All in all a great balance of relaxation and engaging things to do and see. Would go again tomorrow! Thank you all xx"

Set in the Alentejo region north of Faro in a beautiful lakeside location in central Portugal, the Quinta do Barranco da Estrada is surrounded by beautiful countryside with a wide variety of wildlife, flora and fauna with many rare birds in its garden and surrounding countryside.
"We really loved our week with you learning the three printing techniques. You set high standards for us and then gently encouraged us to achieve them. We covered monoprinting, drypoint and linocuts with up to two colours. All this was done outside to the sounds of lots of beautiful birdsong, including Orioles and nightingales. The grounds of the quinta hold beautiful plants to provide inspiration. We produced quality pictures that we never believed we could particularly with the use of colour."
June & Peter - June 2018
The essence of the Quinta is a small, intimate holiday retreat for peace and relaxation. It boasts a blend of traditional hospitality, “International home-cooking” cuisine and a friendly atmosphere with excellent service.
The Quinta has many en-suite rooms, a family suite and a honeymoon suite. It has 2 large drawing rooms with log fires, sauna, a roofed terrace, a vine covered terrace and various lawns within the 2 acre beautifully planted tiered garden that drops down towards the lake. The landscaped terrace garden offers many places to relax and find inspiration for creativity during the holiday, or to just read quietly without interruption.
The surrounding countryside is a patchwork of Cork Oak forests, ("Montados"), and self-sufficient homesteads and small farms. It is in a wonderful birdwatching area and the Quinta's owner, Frank, is a professional Birdwatching Guide who has been running guided birdwatching and photography trips throughout the whole of Southern Portugal for over 25 years.
"Lucy, your friendly, knowledgeable and caring approach to teaching us was very much appreciated. You were patient, kind and supported us, each with our individual needs. Your organisation and planning of the whole week meant we could really relax and concentrate on our prints. Even during our 'time off' we were looking around us for things to draw, a completely new experience and one we hope we can maintain."
Inspiration for printmaking surrounds the Quinta - it really is a fantastic opportunity for true creative relaxation. The week will include 5 sessions of printmaking and 2 optional guided birdwatching walks or hide mornings with bird expert Frank McClintock. Whether you are a bird watcher or not, these are not to be missed. I guarantee that you will not fail to be interested by what Frank has to show you with his entertaining delivery and knowledge.
During the printmaking I will be covering techniques including drypoint etching and linocut giving you the opportunity to produce a number of prints as you learn to improve your line and texture in these exciting mediums. As usual all abilities are welcome and catered for. See comments people have made on previous workshops.
During the holiday there will be lots of free time for you to relax in the beautiful waterside gardens around the property, you will be able to walk some of the local tracks around the area discovering many types of birds, insects and wildlife that inhabit this wonderful location.
You will be able to swim in the warm water in the lake. Canoes and a sailing dingy are available and there is a sauna on site. Shiatsu massage with Daniela is also available.
"There are so many positives about Frank, Daniela and the quinta. Franks knowledge, enthusiasm and love of Portugal and it's wildlife was an added bonus. Daniela's meals were excellent. Sitting round their table chatting will long be remembered. Good wine selection. The accommodation was beautifully clean. Fatima and Dulce were so friendly. Fraser was lovely too."
